The position of adverbs of manner
Definition: Adverbs of manner tell us how something happens.
A/After the main verb:
§ She sings beautifully.
§ Adam spoke softly.
B/After the object or before the verb when
there is one (short object):
§ He finished his
work quickly.
Or
§ He quickly finished
his work.
*** Do not put an
adverb between verb and object.
C/ Long object:
v When the object is very long we put the adverb before the verb or between the verb
and the object:
§ They secretly
singed
a contract with the software company.
Or
§ They singed
secretly
a contract
with the software company.
D/Verb + preposition + object:
v In this case, there are two possibilities, either to put the adverb before the preposition or after
the object:
§ She shouted at me angrily.
§ She shouted angrily at me.
*** In case the object has a number of words the adverb comes before the preposition:
§ She shouted angrily at her children who were playing a
video game.
